Grove Farm Plumeria: The Large Pink Hawaiian Cultivar

Last updated: October 14, 2026

It is easy to assume grove farm plumeria is one of William Moragne’s famous hybrids. He managed Grove Farm on Kauai, after all.

The published record does not say that, and no verified source ties it to his 1953 crosses. What it does have is a large, heavy textured pink flower with a small yellow center and a long bloom season.

Its listed parentage is two forms of Plumeria rubra. This page covers how to recognize it, how it differs from similar pinks, and what is known about its history. For the wider picture, start with our guide to plumeria varieties and colors.

Grove Farm Plumeria at a Glance

Trait Details
Color Moderate to medium pink with a small, brilliant yellow center
Flower size About 4.5 inches across in the main Hawaii study; described as more than 4 inches elsewhere
Petal shape Wide, elliptical, round tipped, highly overlapping
Fragrance Slight and sweet in one source, mild and spicy in another
Bloom season March to October, moderate to heavy production (Hawaii)
Growth habit Upright with open branching
Leaf Light green with short acuminate (tapered) tips
Species or parentage Plumeria rubra form rubra crossed with P. rubra form acuminata
Breeder or origin A classic Hawaiian cultivar; breeder not well documented
Registration Reported as a registered cultivar by one grower source; registration number not well documented

Most of these details trace back to one field study of cultivars grown in Hawaii, the University of Hawaii key. A second grower source repeats much of the flower description, so treat the finer points as lightly documented.

What Grove Farm Plumeria Looks Like

The flower

This is a full, round flower in medium pink. The petals are wide and heavily overlapped, so the bloom reads as one solid disc rather than a pinwheel. A small, bright yellow center sits at the throat.

The petal texture is heavy, which is why keeping quality is rated good. The same study also notes strong red bands on both the front and the back of the petals. Another grower description gives dark pink lines on the front and red bands on the back.

Color shifts with heat and age are not well documented for this cultivar.

Leaves, stems and flower clusters

The leaves are light green and end in short, tapered tips. The flower stalk is greenish red, slender and hairy, and the clusters hang loosely rather than standing upright. Because the blooms are so large, a full cluster can look heavy on its stalk.

Fragrance

Sources disagree here. The Hawaii study calls the scent slight and sweet. A grower description calls it mild and spicy.

Both agree that it is not a powerhouse. This one is grown for flower size and fullness, not scent.

How to Tell Grove Farm Plumeria Apart From Look Alikes

Several Hawaiian pinks share a yellow center and red or pink banding, so mix ups are common. The table below uses the same published Hawaii key for every row, which keeps the measurements comparable.

Cultivar Color and pattern Petal shape Fragrance Key tell
Grove Farm Medium pink, small yellow center, strong red bands front and back Wide, elliptical, round tipped, highly overlapping Slight, sweet Largest flower of the group, about 4.5 in.
Daisy Wilcox Opens light pink and fades toward white, strong yellow throat Broad, rounded, obovate Spicy Fades pale; reddish smooth stalk
Mela Matson Pink with brown tips that reflex down, dark pink band on the back Wide, oval Slight lemon Smaller, about 3.25 in., grainy look
Maui Beauty Pink with a wide strong pink band on the back Wide, round tipped Slight lemon Smaller; often sold as Manoa Beauty

Size is the quickest check. At about 4.5 inches, Grove Farm is noticeably bigger than Mela Matson and Maui Beauty, which both measure around 3.25 inches. Daisy Wilcox is similar in size but fades pale as the flower ages.

Mislabeled cuttings are a real risk with any pink that has a yellow center. If a seller cannot show you a bloom photo from the parent tree, assume the name is unconfirmed until it flowers. Our pink plumeria guide compares other pinks you may run into.

Growing Grove Farm Plumeria

Care follows other rubra types, so use our plumeria care guide for the basics. A few cultivar notes are worth knowing.

  • Habit: The plant is upright with open branching, and the same study rates it suitable for landscaping. Open branching also means light shade beneath the canopy.
  • Bloom habit: Production is moderate to heavy, and the Hawaii season runs from March to October. Bloom timing will shift with climate, so treat those months as a Hawaii reference rather than a promise.
  • Flower weight: Large, heavy textured blooms hold well on the tree. They can still make a loose cluster droop in wind or rain.
  • Cold and sun: Cold tolerance and sun sensitivity are not well documented for this cultivar. Treat it like any rubra and follow our winter care guide if your area gets frost.
  • Containers: No container specific data exists. The open, upright form should suit a large pot, and our guide to growing plumeria in containers covers sizing.

Lei use

The Hawaii study notes the flowers are very attractive in size and fullness but may be too large for the lei trade. That makes it a better garden and display flower than a stringing flower. For lei work, smaller blooms like Mela Matson are the ones the same study recommends.

Origin and History

Where the name comes from is not well documented. Grove Farm is a historic sugar plantation on Kauai. Many classic Hawaiian cultivars in the same key carry the names of people and places.

The name may point to that property, but no verified source confirms it.

The Moragne connection is real but separate. William Middleton Moragne Sr. managed Grove Farm and, in 1953, made what the company’s own history page calls the first recorded controlled crosses between plumerias.

He used Scott Pratt as the pollen parent and Daisy Wilcox as the seed parent. Of 283 seedlings he kept 35, and he named his favorites after women in his family. That page does not list the seedling names, and no verified source links Grove Farm to them.

If you want a true Moragne selection, see our page on Jeannie Moragne plumeria.

The breeder and the year of selection are not well documented. One grower source says the Plumeria Society of America registered it, but the number is not documented.

Where to Buy and How to Propagate

This is not a mainstream nursery staple. It is more often found through specialist plumeria collectors and Hawaii growers than through big box stores. Availability changes.

Our guide to where to buy plumeria cuttings lists the kinds of sellers worth checking.

Ask for a bloom photo and the seller’s source tree. Pink with a yellow center describes dozens of cultivars, so the name alone proves little.

Propagate it by cuttings or grafting, which keep the cultivar true. Our guide to taking plumeria cuttings covers the method. Seedlings from this plant will not come true.

Plumeria seed carries genes from both parents and varies widely.

Strengths and Weaknesses

  • Strengths: Very large, full flowers; heavy texture and good keeping quality; a long bloom season in Hawaii; upright, open habit.
  • Weaknesses: Mild scent; flowers too large for lei work; thin documentation of its origin; cold tolerance unknown.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Grove Farm plumeria one of the Moragne hybrids?

That is not documented. The Moragne seedlings came from a 1953 cross of Scott Pratt and Daisy Wilcox, and no verified source lists Grove Farm among them. Its published parentage is a rubra by acuminata cross.

What color is Grove Farm plumeria?

It is a medium pink with a small, bright yellow center. Sources describe red or dark pink banding on the petals.

Does Grove Farm plumeria smell good?

The scent is mild. One source calls it slight and sweet, and another calls it mild and spicy. It will not scent a yard the way stronger cultivars do.

Is Grove Farm plumeria good for leis?

Not especially. The flowers are about 4.5 inches across, which the Hawaii study says may be too large for the lei trade. They suit gardens, bowls and arrangements better.

When does Grove Farm plumeria bloom?

In Hawaii it flowers from March to October, with moderate to heavy production. Outside Hawaii the timing depends on your climate and how warm your growing season is.
